These things will also be more visible to the player while personality is something that exists behind the curtain. The player has to get to know his characters as the game plays out. And the narrative and dialog scenes are the perfect opportunity to do so. So, by taking that out of the hands of the player, he is allowed to learn about his characters and watch them in a new and innovative way.
This is something I am very excited about! I really hope I have the programming chops to pull it off. Thankfully, Brandon is a database wiz so he can help me with the complicated queries we are going to need to construct in order to procedurally draw these dialogs out of the vast database of dialog options we are going to have to create for this system. Instead, we will be pulling responses out of the database based upon the conditions of our queries. In addition to the other benefits I have already outlines, this also allows for a substantial amount of re-playability.
Not much progress so far this week. We are now fully customizing our characters with UMA Unity Multipurpose Avatar , swapping out slots and overlays, deforming the meshes, and selecting colors for the various component parts we want to change. We also wrote the code to store our character data in our SQLite database and then retrieve it when we load into a new scene. The second part of our focus was ironing out some of the combat system mechanics, getting the animations to work correctly when we moved in combat and loading weapons on the characters.
Its not perfect yet, but we made some excellent progress. A lot of chatter on Twitter today about this new game dev site. If you are a small developer, you should check it out.
